What to see in Vermiglio
During the First World War, Vermiglio lay along the front line and was completely razed to the ground. Today, the village and its surroundings tell the story of those years and the sacrifice of the soldiers through objects, buildings and stories. In addition to the village itself, the must‑see stops are Fort Strino, a restored Austrian fortification that houses artifacts and testimonies from the conflict, including the camouflage uniform of the alpine ski troops, and the Vermiglio War Museum, where weapons and uniforms are displayed alongside tools, work equipment and everyday objects used by the soldiers.
Vermiglio, from the village to the big screen
The history, landscapes and the village of Vermiglio reached all the way to the red carpet with Vermiglio, the film written and directed by Maura Delpero, a filmmaker and screenwriter originally from the village. Set during the final year of the Second World War, it tells the story of a large family that, due to the unexpected arrival of a refugee soldier, loses its peace just as the world is beginning to regain it. Filmed entirely in Vermiglio, the movie involved local residents as actors and extras, giving voice to the vermeano dialect, an essential part of the narrative. Presented at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, it won the Silver Lion and was selected to represent Italy at the 2025 Oscars as Best International Feature Film.
