The Tonale Pass, what to do and see

Tonale 18

The border point between Lombardy and Trentino, the Tonale Pass is a panoramic natural amphitheatre framed by the Adamello‑Presanella, Ortles‑Cevedale, and Brenta mountain groups. From the 1,884 metres of the pass up to the 3,100 metres of the Presena Glacier, here, the mountains can be enjoyed all year round. In winter it is one of the most popular ski destinations in the Alps, with slopes for all levels and iconic descents such as the legendary Paradiso Black Run and the direct Presena–Tonale–Ponte di Legno descent. In summer it becomes the ideal starting point for walks, trekking, and MTB itineraries: even in the warm weather, the Paradiso and Presena cable cars stay open, making it possible to reach the glacier and discover the charm of high altitude.

The first is the variety of the slopes: easy and safe runs accompany those taking their first steps on the snow, while long and technical descents provide thrills for more experienced skiers. The second is the length of the season: thanks to the sunny position of the pass and the presence of the Presena Glacier, it is possible to ski until late May, with consistently well‑maintained snow. Among the signature slopes are the legendary Paradiso Black Run, 3 km long with 710 metres of vertical drop, and the Alpino, a long panoramic slope stretching over 4,500 metres. In summer, the Tonale Pass becomes the starting point for experiencing the high mountains with trekking, excursions, and mountain‑bike itineraries. The Paradiso and Presena cable cars make it possible to comfortably reach high altitude and set off to discover the landscapes of the Presena Glacier and the Presena Basin. Among the most evocative routes are the Path of Flowers, with its suspended walkways and testimonies of the White War, and itineraries leading to Passo del Castellaccio and Corno di Lagoscuro, with views over the Adamello‑Presanella peaks.
